What does the skills test involve?

  •  Swim 50 metres of the pool (on your front) in a specified time of 60 seconds. This is to assess your water fitness.
  •  Swim 25 metres of the pool (on your back) using lifesaving back stroke with both hands held clearly out of the water, in a specified time of 40 seconds. To rescue a casualty you will require the ability to do lifesaving back stroke (Inverted breast stroke leg kick)
  •  Tow a casualty 10 metres.
  •  Retrieve the manikin off the bottom of the pool at the deepest part (1.5m).
  •  Tow the manikin to the poolside and climb out unaided and without using the steps.
  • A demonstration of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Expired Air Ventilation (EAV) will be carried out by a trainer, after which you will be expected to attempt CPR and EAV with guidance from the trainer.
