Leading a healthy lifestyle doesn't have to be about fitness regimes and impossible diets. A little of the right things can do you the world of good. Whatever your age, weight, ability or fitness level you can help yourself with a simple activity like swimming.

It can be used as part of a weight control programme to get results and develop a healthier lifestyle. Research published by Sport England in February 2003 has found that an increase of just 10% in adult activity would prevent 6000 premature deaths in the UK.

A half-hour swim gives the body a thorough work-out, using almost all the muscles and increasing the heart rate - ensuring an increased flow of blood to all essential organs.

Swimming is generally kinder on the body than other sports and one of the safest ways you can exercise, and because the water supports the body's weight, swimming puts almost no strain on the joints - making it ideal for anyone with arthritis or other mobility problems.

As with all forms of exercise, swimming regularly helps combat the health problems caused by obesity.

Paul Jennings, Chair of the NRF Programme Panel for Health, said:

"Swimming is an important factor in helping to create healthy lifestyle habits. By taking more exercise, people can reduce their chances of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis in later life. Other benefits include the reduction of stress, depression and anxiety. Physical activity can also enhance self-esteem, improve social skills and develop physical strength and mobility."

"Importantly, activity in childhood can instil healthy lifestyle habits that will be taken into adulthood."
